Windows 10

29 July 2015

If you've agreed to reserve your free copy of Windows 10 via the Notification Area prompt on Windows 7 and 8.1 systems, you may notice that a \$windows.~BT directory has been created on your system drive, and installation files totalling several GB are being silently downloaded to that location. Installation of Windows 10 will begin in waves across the world over the coming week. If you haven't seen the "Get Windows 10" prompt, you need to install the KB3035583 update (or see these detailed instructions); conversely, if you want to get rid of the prompt, you need to uninstall and then hide the same KB update. There are no official ISO files for Windows 10 retail at the moment, so currently the only official way to do a clean install is to go through the upgrade process as above, then do a clean (re)install (e.g. by using the Reset feature). For more details, see this Microsoft Windows 10 FAQ and this SuperSite Upgrade FAQ.

Update: You can use this Microsoft Community Guide to create a bootable ISO file from the Windows 10 installation files.

Update 2: Microsoft has now released an official Download Tool which allows you to easily download and create a bootable Windows 10 ISO file.

Update 3: Even if you use an ISO, unless you have a Windows 10 product key, you must first do an upgrade on an existing valid Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system to activate your free copy of Windows 10. Then you can do a complete clean install on the same system, and your Windows 10 is automatically activated and tied to that system's hardware.
